Strengths & Energy

You know that feeling when you get to do something you LOVE to do?  That super energized feeling, where time loses all meaning and things are just fun?   For example, I love concerts.  To me live music is so fun and exhilarating, and when I’m headed to a concert, I’m giddy for days in advance!  For you it might be crunching numbers, walking the dog, problem solving, games, travel, family time or brainstorming.

Did you know we all have a secret stash of energy, built right into our Strengths?  When we’re using our own top strengths, we are creating energy for ourselves.  Our strengths are those things we do naturally, usually without effort and often with amazing skill.  When we use them well, we have fun and we’re at the top of our game.  We are a force of nature!  Strengths are energizing and feel great.

And when we have to use the strengths at the bottom of our list?  Ugh.  Draining.  We are all perfectly capable of doing those things we aren’t so good at, but it’s feels exhausting.  It’s like writing with your non-dominant hand.  It’s clunky.  It’s awkward.  It’s not fun.

If you’re looking to infuse some energy into your job or routine, take a look at your top Strengths and ask yourself:

  • Am I using my strengths daily?
  • If not, how can I intentionally use 1 or 2 of my top strengths each day? Think of a specific meeting or a project where you can try it out in a safe place.  Have fun with it!
  • If I can’t use my strengths at work, how can I use them outside of work to infuse my life with some added energy?

It doesn’t need to be complicated.  Just find a way to use those beautiful strengths of yours, and pay attention to the boost in your energy.  It’s worth it, and when you can use them every day?  YOWZA!
